Living Outloud: Faithfulness in Different Situations
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We walk through Luke 12 and name what faithfulness looks like when following Jesus gets hard, awkward, or costly. We connect integrity, fear, money, anxiety, readiness, and relationships into a whole-life picture of discipleship that doesn’t let us hide in one “strong” area.
• inner integrity over hypocrisy in private and public life
• fear rightly placed, choosing reverence for God over fear of people
• public allegiance to Jesus, trusting the Holy Spirit for words under pressure
• greed exposed by the rich fool, learning to be rich toward God
• stewardship that starts now, not after you feel “abundance”
• freedom from anxiety as an act of humility and trust
• treasuring the kingdom, holding possessions loosely and investing in what lasts
• alertness and readiness, fighting complacency in Christian living
• responsibility proportional to what we have been given, including spiritual gifts
• loyalty to Christ amid division, spiritual discernment in reading the times
• making things right quickly, choosing reconciliation before conflict grows

Why Faithfulness Gets Tested
SPEAKER_01This is another episode of Living Out Loud, part of our Out Loud Bible podcast, where we talk about what we read earlier in this week and just get real practical with it. What can we do about this? It's one thing to hear it, it's another thing to do it. And that's what we're here to do. So uh Kelsey's here, I'm here, we're gonna have a conversation about something we read earlier in Luke chapter 12. And sure enough, as we were reading and talking about it then, I was like, hmm, let's talk about this more later on this week. And here we are. Because Luke 12, Jesus does a lot of talking about uh about what faithfulness looks like. And I think it's very timely in his ministry because at this point he's got like lots of people following him, but then lots of people fall away just because like, oh, this isn't exactly what I thought it would be, or or oh yeah, this is good for a while, and then I don't know, it just got hard, and I just I don't know. I or I I'm following him for a little bit, but then my friends and family think I joined some cult now, and so I don't I don't know, I don't wanna I don't want them to think that, right? All these all these things that that start just thinning the crowds a little bit. And so Jesus is talking about faithfulness because he wants to teach people what faithfulness looks like. And it's it's one thing to just say, like, oh yeah, I follow Jesus, and another thing to actually keep following Jesus in light of other things that go on. And um it's certainly relatable today. I know, I know unfortunately many still start following Jesus and they go are baptized even, and then yeah, months, years, probably not even years later, it just I don't know, life happens, uh difficulties come up, and it can be easier to just go back to your old ways or to give in to the opinions of people around you, or you just run up against something that makes following Jesus hard, and it's like, oh, instead of doing that, I'll just keep going my own way. And so today, as we we go through Luke chapter 12 again, a little more in depth, I I I'm gonna pull out a number of faithfulness is this, or like faithfulness looks like this in these different situations. And I'm I'm not expecting everyone to be like, oh, I gotta write that down. Let me make a list of I don't know, 10 things here. Um but really if if there's even just one, maybe even a couple that are like that is probably an area I need to grow in, that's probably that that's the Holy Spirit in you saying, Yeah, grow in faithfulness here. You know, this is this is a struggle, but let's let's grow in this area. And if there's an something we're talking about that's like, oh that's I mean, that sounds good, but that's not necessarily a problem for me. Okay, great, fine, we'll we'll let it pass and we'll we'll talk about the next one. So um, again, not trying to keep all this information in our heads all at once, but just letting the Holy Spirit kind of give little nods or shakes of the head based on on what we need to to carry out of this conversation. Is that cool? Um so in Luke chapter 12, the first chunk here, Jesus is just talking about be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, he says, which is hypocrisy. Uh and and so Jesus cares
Hypocrisy And Inner Integrity
SPEAKER_01very much that uh faithfulness, first of all, is involving inner integrity. And there there has to be a faithfulness to live the same being the same person in private and in public. And I mean, that's ultimately what integrity is, not only being the same person, but also being, you know, a a good person in both situations.
SPEAKER_00I remember this was a massive struggle for me when I was in high school because I had my school friends and I had my church friends. I had kind of two different spheres of life, and I kind of had home life, maybe was the third one. And I was a very different person depending on who I was with, because depending on what people expected of me, I was the perfect church kid. I was a good daughter at home, but like at school, it's like, well, it's not very cool to be good. It's not very cool to be uh Christian. And so I kind of changed who I was depending on who I was with. And praise God, that's no longer how I live my life, but it's just a very relatable one to me. Um, I I wish I had had someone sit me down and have this blunt conversation with me when I was 16, 17, uh to to call me out on the hypocrisy of the way I was choosing to live based on who I was around.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's it's it's unfortunately just too easy to just kind of be the person that you want the people you're around to to like and and want to be with. And and there's nothing wrong with that in and of itself. It's just the problem becomes when it becomes a matter of living different lives based on who you're with in different situations. And that really kind of goes into the second point here in verses four through seven. Uh Jesus is talking about like, don't be afraid of people who can, you know, hurt your body but can't do anything about your soul. You gotta fear God. And so
Fear Of God Over Fear Of People
SPEAKER_01faithfulness here is fear rightly placed, because fear wrongly placed is going to what we were talking about previously, about fearing what people are gonna think if we say or do something that they don't like, but you know, something that maybe God is asking us to do, but not popular with them. Um and we've talked about the fear of God before in this. Um, and this is I mean, you are vulnerable in point number one. This will this will be one for me to be vulnerable. I I mean I care, I care so much about what other people think of me. I I've gotten better, I think I've grown over the past few years to uh to yes, certainly fear God and and but give less weight to people, but I just I want to be the the nice guy, and I want to I I don't want to annoy anyone and I I I don't want anyone to be upset with me, and so I I will it often comes in the form of not saying what I should say or doing what I should do and just trying to live more neutrally. It's not necessarily, you know, a a sin of committing an action or a word, it's more in in omission of what I should be doing because I'm like, ah, I don't want I don't want them to you know think about it. You don't want to stir up any conflict, you don't want to I'll just avoid that and and that is a a way that a fear of other people can can come up.
SPEAKER_00But when we have our faithfulness that's rooted in fear rightly placed, then we have we can actually live with courage that's rooted in being known and valued by God. So we can we can grow our courage to stand up for what is right and to to live with integrity and to be faithful when it's like the fear of God produces a courage in us to actually stand up in the world for what is good and what is right and what is righteous.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, which is exactly what he says starting in verse 8 about uh whoever acknowledges me, Jesus, before other people, then Jesus I'm gonna is gonna acknowledge you before the angels.
Public Allegiance And Help To Speak
SPEAKER_01And and the negative is true of denying. So um the idea of just being public with your faith is is another faithfulness, a public allegiance to Jesus, allegiance to the kingdom of God publicly. And and I think you you've kind of seen a progression here of faithfulness in inner integrity, and then that will help us to develop a faithfulness in having a proper fear of God and and less of a fear of man, and then doing that, like you said, that develops a courage to be able to be faithful in public allegiance, acknowledging Jesus openly, even when it costs you something, like in relationships or well, in our country it doesn't cost you your life, but there are far too many places in the world where being a Christian openly will is at the is at the cost of your life, is at the risk of it.
SPEAKER_00And um, I I actually read a a study, or maybe I was watching um a psychiatrist give a talk or something about how psychologically speaking, being rejected from your social circle is equivalent to death as far as our psychology is concerned.
SPEAKER_01The way your brain processes it.
SPEAKER_00The way your brain processes it. And so that is why we as humans are so we'll push back so hard against something that we feel would ostracize us from our community. And so, so while, yes, correct, in our country, you won't be put to death for speaking the name of Jesus, you very well could be ostracized from your community, um, looked down upon at your work, be uh rejected by friends and family, and that fear of rejection of by the people around you can stop you from from speaking out about uh about Jesus and and if and if affiliating yourself with him publicly.
SPEAKER_01And fortunately, Jesus promises help in the situation because I it's easy to say, Oh yeah, I'll I'll defend Jesus publicly, I'll I'll stand up for him. I've never had to be in a position where there was really great cost at doing that. So it's it's it's so it's something to say, but I you know, is your money where your mouth is, so to speak? But uh Jesus says, hey, you know, in that moment, like the Holy Spirit will teach you what to say in that moment. And so faithfulness also is just trusting that, that that that trusting that the the Holy Spirit will supply the words that you need when you need them, when you're under pressure like that. And uh and so faithfulness in in our public allegiance with Jesus uh comes up in that in that conversation. And then Jesus uh switches gears here because someone switches the conversation. And I just Jesus is talking all about this, you know, all this stuff, and then someone says, Hey, hey, Jesus, can you
Greed Exposed By The Barn Parable
SPEAKER_01can you tell my brother to give me my share of the money? It's like are you are you paying attention? Like, read the room, bud. And even Jesus is like, dude, what what why Jesus is like, oh my me.
SPEAKER_00Good.
SPEAKER_01Go find a judge. Like, I'm not like I'm not a judge. Go talk to the judge about this. Like, who do you think I am? Um and but you know, okay, since you brought it up.
SPEAKER_00Since you interrupted anyway, let's go.
SPEAKER_01Then we'll let's talk about the greed that you obviously have. And he tells this parable of a man who is like, Oh, I've got plenty of stuff. Uh what am I gonna do with this? Oh, I'll build up a barn and then I'll just kind of relax the rest of my life. And so, faithfulness here in this in this parable is is talking about being rich toward God. Because the problem wasn't even that he stored up riches for himself. It says in verse 21, so it is uh the the negative consequence is he that is he lost his stuff, he lost his life. Jesus says, So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God. So I I I I mean I can't say that it's wrong to store up riches for yourself. In and of itself, the problem is not being rich toward God. And so faithfulness is being rich toward God. What does that look like? Well, what does that mean? What does that mean? I mean, there's an element here of like we can't just measure life or worth or value by money. We use numbers to assign or or define value for everything. Like the value of a car is how much money does it cost? The value of a person is how much what is their salary, you know? Uh a value of a person, uh uh of a athlete, how many points do they score? Or you know, or a value of a of a model, how how many pounds do they weigh?
SPEAKER_00The millionaires and billionaires, and you can Google what is their net worth.
SPEAKER_01Net worth. Like how much worth are you overall? Like what? So we use numbers to assign worth, and God does not ascribe to that. That is not his invention, that is not his his model. And so we when we fall into that trap, then we're gonna we're not gonna be rich toward God. And we need to instead see this wealth, whatever he gives us, whether you call yourself wealthy or not, whatever he gives you is from him, and so we have to be stewards of it. And and the problem with this man in the parable is not that he stored it up necessarily or that he had a lot of it, but he was like, I'm just gonna use this all for myself. I'll be able to relax, eat, drink, and celebrate.
SPEAKER_00And and that that was his primary uh concern of life. Yes, he wasn't concerned with things of heaven, he wasn't concerned of things of the kingdom, he was concerned of his own possessions and his own wealth and his own comfort. Um, and and I think that that is a distinguishing factor.
SPEAKER_01What do you do with your abundance? Because that was his, he was like, wow, I have a lot more than I thought. That's great. What am I gonna do? I'll keep it for myself. And there's there's the breakdown. Um, and so we have to live with eternity in mind. We have to live as like, you know, there's an eternity here to to think about and prepare for and help.
SPEAKER_00Not only your abundance, Mike, I'm gonna push back on that just a second. And and I know you agree with me, but it's not just what do I do with my abundance, it's what do I do with everything that God's given me. Yeah. You don't have to, you we do not get to, as Christ followers, wait until we have an abundance before we're generous.
SPEAKER_01Once I won win the lottery, I'll I'll give a bunch to the church. It'll be great.
SPEAKER_00Right. And and um, and so we have to be careful to not wait until there's an abundance to figure out what to do with it, but but having the mindset of I have I have been given what I have by God, all of my possessions, all of my bank account, everything I have, everything I own is from God. How does he want me to use it? And I think that this guy in the parable was only thinking in that abundant mindset, in that mindset of like, I just I have more, I have a lot and I'm gonna get more and I'll use it for myself, instead of thinking, even when he didn't have a lot, how am I gonna use this for God? Because if if you are not thinking that when you don't have a lot, you're never gonna reach a point of abundance where you feel like you have excess to give away.
SPEAKER_01Stewardship starts now with what you have, even if you don't think you have extra. The stewardship starts now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then by the time if if the Lord blesses you with extra and extra and extra, then you're gonna give that much more um back to seed into his kingdom.
SPEAKER_01And then Jesus says a therefore, right? After that discussion of that parable, that man who and now he's you know, he stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God.
SPEAKER_00Jesus says, Therefore And wherever you see a therefore, you have to ask what it's therefore.
SPEAKER_01And so then Jesus says, Therefore, I tell you not to worry about your life. And then he starts uh
Anxiety, Humility, And Trusting God
SPEAKER_01teaching about worries and flowers and birds, and it's very similar to the Sermon on the Mount, if you're familiar with that. I think there's kind of excerpts here that Luke is using throughout his story here. And uh and so not to worry, which is now another uh appearance of faithfulness. Faithfulness is freedom from our anxiety, freedom from anxious striving. Our faithfulness is literally to not keep worrying. And I that's interesting, and I'm not just making a point based on this one. I I was reading first Peter, and I want to redirect us here to First Peter chapter one, verses six and seven. It says, Be humbled, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that he might exalt you in due time, having cast all your anxiety upon him because he cares for you. Did you catch the connection there between humbling yourself and and having cast your anxieties on him? Like that humility and going to God with your worries and your anxieties are tied together in First Peter chapter one here.
SPEAKER_00And to hold on to and to fuel your own anxieties and to not let them go and to say, Well, I have to worry about it, is pride and it is not being faithful. So in this faithfulness conversation, faithfulness to Christ looks like giving your anxieties to him and not hanging on to them. Choosing to obey and not worry, but instead cast your anxieties on him because he cares for you. And that in and of itself is an act of humility that builds more humility in you. Um it's pushing against the pride of saying that I've gotta take care of myself and I've got to worry about the things I worry about, and I've got to, I've I've gotta be in charge of my anxieties.
SPEAKER_01Because if if you're really clinging on to these worries and trying to do everything you can to make ends meet, so to speak, then then really you're trusting your own ability to make ends meet or to make money, or trusting your own hustle to get things done more than you are trusting that God will provide for you if you rest and if you give him your worries in the first place, or if you pursue kingdom stuff instead of all the the other stuff.
SPEAKER_00Faithfulness here is letting God's care for birds and lilies shape your priorities. Letting trusting in humility that you can't take care of yourself better than God takes care of flowers. And if God takes care of the flowers, he's gonna take care of you because you're so much more valuable. So, so that is the faithfulness in this context, I think.
SPEAKER_01And I know we could talk about that for a whole nother set of episodes and maybe someday, but not right now. But that does lead us into Jesus does give a positive example. It's not just like, oh, don't worry. He's giving a positive thing to do now. He says in verses 32 through 34 uh to treasure the kingdom. And this is like just just make sure that you're treasuring the right thing. And here's what you should treasure the kingdom. Faithfulness is treasuring God's kingdom. And I know that's harder because that that's not something we can see. That's not something that is so obvious to us as you know, the money and the provisions and the worries in front of us. But that's why it's an act of faithfulness, because faith is like taking action on what we don't fully see, and we don't have complete assurance that it's gonna happen the way, you know, the way he says, but but that's what faithfulness is. It's trusting, like, okay, he says to Church of the Kingdom, I'm gonna do that. I don't exactly know what that all means. I don't know if it's all gonna work out the way I think, but I'm gonna trust and be faithful that that that's that that's the right thing to do. And so we uh we to do that, we hold our possessions loosely, we invest differently, we invest in what can't uh what thieves can't steal, what moths can't destroy, and that is in the people that God cares about, right? It's it's helping people uh develop f the the the fruit of the spirit. Not that we can grow it in them, but like we can help uh foster God's kind of fruit and God's kind of growth, that is kingdom growth. That w it doesn't it's it's not measured by numbers. Like we can't put a value proposition on it because well, I don't know, it's it's it's a kingdom kind of value when it comes to the growth that he's looking to see in people. But if we prioritize that, he says, you you prioritize that, you treasure the kingdom stuff like that, then then you're you're being faithful and you're you're doing the right thing, you're in the right place. He uh he then talks about in this next section, talking about verse 35 through 40, this alertness, uh like people waiting for the master
Treasuring The Kingdom Over Stuff
SPEAKER_01of a wedding celebration or someone who is uh alert for when their house is being broken into. So faithfulness is alertness, it's readiness. Faithfulness is and this isn't even very active, it's it's just intentional.
SPEAKER_00It's gosh, I I I feel like this one is so relevant to the church and Christianity, especially in the West today, thinking about complacency is just plaguing the church and Christianity and Christians. It's so easy to just become complacent, to be happy with your own relationship with God and I don't know, just kind of go on autopilot and easy to do. And this is speaking directly against complacency in the church and complacency in Christian living. Uh faithfulness is being alert and ready, is the opposite of complacent and comfortable, right? So, so we just really I think we just have to fight against the tendency to want to become complacent and comfortable in our lives and in our walk with Christ. Um because we don't know when he's coming back, and we do want to be found faithful when he gets here and and scoops us up.
SPEAKER_01And at this point in the story in Luke, Peter jumps in and is like, hey, Jesus, are are you talking to like everyone here? Or are you telling this just for like us, the disciples? And Jesus then kind of answers his
Readiness, Stewardship, And Responsibility
SPEAKER_01the spirit of his question with a really it's more about stewardship. Like if I've given a lot to somebody, then I'm gonna expect a lot from them. If and if someone doesn't have a whole lot, then I'm not gonna expect a whole lot here. And it's not about money. He's not talking about money here, but in in this conversation about stewardship, he's talking about what have you received. Like Jesus said, uh as he even prayed in John 15, like, I've given my disciples everything that God the Father gave me to tell them. Like that's a lot. And so this is a a pretty pointed one for me because for me and my family, like I I know my my mother and my father I are both Christians. Uh that goes back multiple generations. And I the older I get, the more blessed I I realize I I am in that area. And having, you know, I I know the Bible, I've got the I've got the whole word of God, uh, that means a lot of responsibility. And God's going to ask a lot of me. Um and ex having expected me to do a lot with that. Other people that like, I don't know, my my parents aren't aren't Christians. I I'm just kind of the first one in my family to be a Christian. I just got saved a few days ago, and and I I I gotta, you know, and I I think I know a Bible verse. Like, that's all great, that's great, and that's awesome. And you're in a great place. Um, the the responsibility God's not asking as much of you now. So I guess hopefully that relieves the pressure.
SPEAKER_00Is what Jesus is saying.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So if you if all you know is John 3.16, you have an extreme responsibility to carry John 3.16.
SPEAKER_01Live it, share it, do it.
SPEAKER_00If you have the whole of the Bible that you're you've been studying and you know, and all you do is read it for yourself, but you never go out and share it with anybody else, that's not good stewardship, right? So it doesn't really matter how much you know or how much you've been given. The stewardship is is proportionately being responsible with what you've given or been with what you've been given. So doing something with what God's given you. In proportion to the amount he's he's blessed you with. That can be gifting. That can be more than just how much of the Bible do you know? It can be gifting, a spiritual gift. If you know that God's given you a spiritual gift and you're not using it, then you're not being a good steward with it. If you know that he's given you a spiritual gift, your responsibility as a good steward of that spiritual gift is to fan it into flame, is to use it, is to learn more about it, is to lean into it and ask the Holy Spirit to grow it in you and to actively seek opportunities to use it for the growing of the church and the and discipling of other believers. So it's I I think that's where it's going.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, stewardship is just one of those, again, one of those topics of the Christian faith that like we need to we need to figure this out. We need to know how to be a good steward because that that really describes our whole life. It affects our whole life. Um and so it deserves longer conversation, but for the sake of our time, we're gonna keep moving. Um in this next section, Jesus kind of takes a darker turn. He's like, I've come to bring fire on the earth, and I wish we were already kindled. We're like, whoa, what happened? What happened here, Jesus? Um, but he talks about faithfulness in um being
Loyalty Through Division And Discernment
SPEAKER_01loyalty amidst the division that he himself is causing. He's causing division between families. He's like, I'm I'm gonna, based on what I say and do, there are gonna be families where the father and the son disagree and they're gonna be split. Mothers and daughters are gonna be split, and I'm gonna break up families, and I'm and faithfulness is going to be your loyalty in the midst of the division that I'm causing. Like, wow, yikes. Usually, if someone's causing breaking up families and breaking up relationships, I'm like, you know what, that's not for me. I'm out. I'm I don't want anything to do with that. But Jesus is like, no, if you follow me, you have to follow me through the division that I'm causing. And it may affect your relationships with the people that you love most. Ooh. That's a big ask. I I I don't think I've experienced that. Have you? Where your allegiance to Christ has has forced a division in relationships.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01Um I know I know people for who that is true. I may not be the best one to speak into that topic, but I do know, at least from what Jesus is saying here, that we can expect that. And uh and faithfulness is is loyalty amidst the division that he is causing. Uh he's not here to just make everyone feel good and to, you know, love each other all the time. There's uh faithfulness also in this in this spiritual discernment, he also said to the crowds, hey, you know how to read the weather. How come you don't know how to interpret the the times of like the days of the Lord and what God's doing? Faithfulness is just as a faithful weather person looks at the sky and makes these conclusions based on what they see, we should be looking at a present time. We should be looking at the news, we should be looking at what's going on in the world and reading, kind of tracing the connecting the dots and tracing the fingerprints of God and seeing, like, you know what, God's doing something here. That's also gonna keep your anxiety about the news down. Like, if you're gonna watch the news, at least watch the news to connect the dots connect the God dots. If you're not doing that, then stop watching the news. You're just working yourself up. But if you want to see, oh, I can see what God's doing, look at the news, look at what's going on in the world, and compare it with what we can read in scripture and what we can know about God's heart and be like, you know what, he's doing something here. That's a that's a sense of spiritual discernment that is that Jesus says is what faithfulness looks like here. And finally, this is what, number 11, okay? Faithfulness is making things right right now. He he gives this example of look, if if you have a conflict with someone, you just make it right
Make Things Right And Final Reflections
SPEAKER_01now, before it gets in before it blows up in some legal system or blows up involving other people, just make things right. Be faithful right now with who you have in front of you. If you have a conflict now, just go make it right. That's what faithfulness demands of you right now, before it gets out of control.
SPEAKER_00I love Mike how you started this conversation with inviting us to kind of lean into maybe one area where we're feeling a little convicted or where we know we need to grow. And and yet I'm also hearing by the end of this conversation, like this is just what faithfulness looks like. Like you don't really get to pick and choose off of this. This is not a menu, it's not a buffet. This is a faithful person, a person faithfully following Christ will be faithful in all of these areas. And I know sanctification is a process and we're all on a different journey.
SPEAKER_01Some will come easier, some areas than others.
SPEAKER_00But they're all very intertwined too, right? Like as we were talking, I was just hearing, well, that connects to the first thing we said, and that third one connects to the seventh one, and like they're all very interconnected because as we're following Christ, um, faithfulness to Christ will just bleed into every area. He cares about faithfulness in your finances, in your relationships, in your public-facing persona, in your personal private interactions, and he just your faithfulness to him is meant to seep through every area of your life, and no spot is off limits, and everything affects every other area too.
SPEAKER_01Almost like he wants your whole life because he gave his whole life wild. Well, that's faithfulness in a nutshell. Um yeah, hey, what areas of of our discussion here have maybe uh pricked you to lean in and ask God to help you grow in those areas? Which areas have you seen great victories and growth? Uh, I want to celebrate those with you. Thanks for joining us here on this conversation about Luke chapter twelve. Thanks for being here on the Out Loud Bible Podcast, and we'll see you next time.
